Professional Wood's Lamps

See What Ordinary Light May Not Reveal

Named after American physicist Robert W. Wood, the Wood's lamp uses long-wave UVA light to reveal fluorescence and contrast variations that ordinary lighting may not show. Long used by trained professionals in dermatology and veterinary examination, Wood's light is also a valuable tool for detailed skin observation in beauty salons.

The Principle

The Principle Behind Wood's Light

Wood's light uses long-wave UVA illumination to reveal visible fluorescence and contrast variations that may be difficult to observe under conventional lighting.

The visible result depends on numerous factors, including the surface examined, preparation of the area, products or residues present, ambient light, lamp positioning and the experience of the observer.

IDEALDERM presents two dedicated professional versions: one for skin observation in beauty salons and one for veterinary skin and coat examination.

Two Professional Applications

The two IDEALDERM versions have distinct intended purposes, product codes, user guides and fluorescence colour references.

Veterinary Version

Professional Wood's Lamp for Veterinary Skin and Coat Examination

Product code: idwolav

Observe Coat Fluorescence and Support Targeted Veterinary Investigation

The IDEALDERM Professional Wood's Lamp for Veterinary Skin and Coat Examination is a complementary professional observation tool intended for veterinarians and qualified animal-health professionals.

Under appropriate conditions, the lamp helps professionals observe fluorescence on the skin and coat and identify hairs or areas that may require closer examination or targeted sampling.

Certain dermatophyte-associated hairs may display visible fluorescence under Wood's light. This observation can assist the professional in selecting hairs or scales for additional veterinary investigation.

Intended users: Veterinarians and qualified animal-health professionals.

Documentation: Dedicated Veterinary user guide and colour reference.

Wood's light does not confirm ringworm on its own; not all dermatophytes fluoresce, and confirmatory testing may be required.

  • Examine animal skin and coat under long-wave UVA light
  • Help locate hairs or areas presenting unusual fluorescence
  • Support targeted hair and scale collection
  • Complement professional veterinary examination
  • Integrated magnification for closer observation
  • Light-excluding hood for improved conditions
  • Suitable for veterinary practices and animal clinics
  • Suitable for professional shelters and breeding facilities

Ready for Professional Use

Each version is supplied ready for use with the accessories and documentation required for its dedicated application.

Professional Observation in Four Steps

01

Prepare the Area

Ensure that the examined skin or coat area is clean, dry and prepared according to the dedicated user guide. Products, residues, fibres and topical preparations may influence fluorescence.

02

Reduce Ambient Light

Use the lamp in a sufficiently darkened environment and correctly position the black light-excluding examination hood.

03

Observe Carefully

Follow the warm-up time, operating distance, maximum operating time and safety instructions stated in the dedicated user guide.

04

Interpret Responsibly

Consider the preparation of the examined area, ambient conditions and possible sources of misleading fluorescence. Interpret the observation according to the intended purpose of the selected version.

I am very satisfied with this first order. I ordered this lamp to potentially detect ringworm on the cats I rescue from the street. The lamp works perfectly.

Yes. The skin should be clean, dry and free from make-up, creams, lotions, soap residues and topical products, as these substances may influence fluorescence and lead to misleading observations. To help remove superficial residues and excess sebum, we recommend preparing the skin with IDEALDERM Peeling Lotion, used strictly according to its instructions, preferably on the day before observation. After preparation, ensure that no product residue remains on the skin. If rinsing is required by the product instructions, rinse thoroughly and gently pat the skin dry using a clean, lint-free towel or a disposable nonwoven wipe. Do not rub the skin and do not apply make-up, cream, lotion or another skincare product before observation.
No. With a rated input power of only 22 W, the IDEALDERM Wood's Lamp has low electricity consumption and is designed for short professional observation sessions. Connection voltage: 220–240 V Frequency: 50/60 Hz Rated input power: 22 W UV lighting: Four 4 W UV tubes
The standard European version is designed for a 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz electrical supply and can be used in European countries with a compatible mains supply and plug connection. Plug adapters for the United Kingdom and Switzerland are available and must be ordered separately from the IDEALDERM online shop. A dedicated version with a US plug and electrical specifications adapted to the United States is available for the US market. Always order the version corresponding to the destination country. A plug adapter changes only the plug format and does not convert the electrical voltage.
Yes. The Wood's Lamp features an integrated magnifying lens positioned centrally between the four UV tubes. This arrangement combines illumination and magnification in the same observation area, making smaller fluorescent details and variations easier to see.
Ambient light can reduce the visibility of fluorescence and make observation more difficult. The supplied black light-excluding examination hood helps reduce external light and improve observation conditions.
Yes. Compatible replacement UV tubes are available separately from the IDEALDERM online shop. View Replacement UV Tube →
Yes. Each product version includes a dedicated user guide in the language of the order. The Beauty Salon and Veterinary versions have different intended purposes and different fluorescence colour references.
The physical lamp design may be identical, but each version has a different intended purpose, product code, presentation, user guide and fluorescence colour reference.
Beauty therapists, beauticians and other beauty salon professionals should select: Professional Wood's Lamp for Skin Observation in Beauty Salons — idwolab.
Veterinarians and qualified animal-health professionals should select: Professional Wood's Lamp for Veterinary Skin and Coat Examination — idwolav.
No. The Beauty Salon version is intended exclusively for professional visual observation of skin appearance in beauty salons. It does not provide or replace a medical diagnosis.
No. A colour, contrast or fluorescence pattern alone cannot identify or exclude a disease, infection or microorganism. Any suspicious, persistent or unusual skin alteration should be referred to a qualified physician or dermatologist.
No. Wood's light can help a qualified professional observe certain fluorescent hairs and identify areas for targeted sampling. Not all dermatophytes or affected hairs fluoresce, and the absence of fluorescence does not exclude ringworm or dermatophytosis. Additional methods such as microscopy, fungal culture, PCR or another appropriate veterinary test may be necessary.

Intended Use and Important Information

Beauty Salon Version — Intended Purpose

The IDEALDERM Professional Wood's Lamp for Skin Observation in Beauty Salons is intended for visual observation of the appearance of human skin by trained beauty professionals in beauty salons. It supports professional beauty consultations and the selection of suitable non-medical skincare and beauty care recommendations. The product is not intended to diagnose, prevent, monitor, predict, prognose, treat or exclude any disease, infection or medical condition. A fluorescence colour, pattern or contrast does not identify a disease, infection or microorganism. Any suspicious, persistent or unusual skin alteration should be referred to a qualified physician or dermatologist.

Veterinary Version — Intended Purpose

The IDEALDERM Professional Wood's Lamp for Veterinary Skin and Coat Examination is intended as a complementary visual examination tool for veterinarians and qualified animal-health professionals. It supports the observation of animal skin and coat fluorescence and helps localise hairs or areas that may require closer examination or targeted sampling. Not all dermatophytes or affected hairs produce visible fluorescence under Wood's light. The absence of fluorescence does not exclude dermatophytosis, ringworm or another veterinary condition. Fluorescence may also be influenced by residues, fibres, topical products, crusts, scales or environmental contamination. Observations must be interpreted by a qualified professional and confirmed, where appropriate, using microscopy, fungal culture, PCR or another suitable veterinary method.

Factors That May Influence Fluorescence

Fluorescence and colour perception may be influenced by: ambient light; insufficient preparation; skincare or veterinary products; soap residues; topical medication; fibres and lint; sebum; crusts and scales; the observer's colour perception; lamp distance and positioning; ageing or replacement of UV tubes. Fluorescence should always be interpreted within the intended purpose and dedicated instructions of the selected product version.
